Today, “the point” of an article (or story, joke, aphorism, question, etc.) is avoided by people as if it were the new plague. We are inundated with needless details, side bars, ramblings, sells pitches, sucking up, demagoguery, and every other device that provides no necessary information. Some use these devices to purposely evade “the point”, because, in fact, they have no point. Some use them to hide the fact that they have no real facts (“real” as opposed to alternative). Some use them to spark emotions in order to bolster their argument, because their argument is either weak or they believe their listener/reader is a moron — and quite often they are.
Then there are those who use unnecessary communicative devices due to their mind simply working that way. They have no ulterior motive. For example, the friend who answers a simple question, such as, “so, what did you have for dinner last night?”, by explaining the air quality when he left work, what was on the radio as he drove, how a bird almost flew into his windshield, which reminds him of a trip he took to Mobile, Alabama once with his mother and her cousin from Minneapolis (or maybe it was St. Paul), and they went on a fishing boat and saw a stork catch a fish off a… and on and on. When simply answering, “I ordered Pad Thai from Grubhub”, would have sufficed.
